Mr Alfonso Wong Chak (1925–2017), creator of the first edition of the “Old Master Q” comics, started publishing his works in local newspaper columns in 1962 under the nom de plume Wong Chak, the name of his eldest son. Seeing his father getting on in years, architecture scholar and artist Mr Joseph Wong Chak resolutely took up the baton of the “Old Master Q” comics in 1995 to carry forward the spirit of Old Master Q. He has since remained steadfast in the works to this day. Simple and easy to understand, the “Old Master Q” comics often feature humorous plot lines that bring knowing smiles to readers. The comic characters, such as Old Master Q, Big Potato, Mr Chin and Miss Chen, have all taken root in people’s hearts and entertained generations in Hong Kong. Following the release of the “Old Master Q” special stamps in 2019, Hongkong Post issues a new set of special stamps themed “Old Master Q II” featuring various festive celebrations, including the Lunar New Year, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival and Christmas. Characters from the “Old Master Q” comics are depicted immersed in the rich festive atmosphere to showcase their unique charm and vibrancy.

$2.20 Stamp – Lunar New Year
Dressed in festive attire, Old Master Q, Big Potato and Mr Chin pose for a humorous yet auspicious picture of “Lunar New Year Greetings” on the stamp. Mr Chin, carrying a little horse that symbolises good omen, joins Big Potato, with a horse-headed staff that represents steadiness and boldness, in wishing everyone swift success and good health in the new year.
$2.80 Stamp – Valentine’s Day
On the stamp, Old Master Q, Big Potato, Miss Chen and Mr Chin jointly present a “Declaration of Love”, spreading sweetness and a sense of humour. The stamp features a lively and cheerful composition, with the four of them, standing side by side, working together to spell out the word “LOVE” by holding aloft the letter signs. The stamp ingeniously captures the multifaceted nature of love: it is not only the romance between two people, but also the joy and warmth of being together with friends.
$3.70 Stamp – Easter
Old Master Q reinvents himself as a playful Easter Bunny on the stamp! He dresses in a bunny onesie with long rabbit ears and holds a colourful Easter egg, creating a unique “Master Q Bunny” fusion style. Beside Old Master Q stands a “Bunny Girl” wearing a pink bunny-eared headband, who is arm in arm with him to extend festive blessings to everyone.
$4 Stamp – Dragon Boat Festival
Old Master Q and his buddies stage an offbeat dragon boat race on the stamp, brimming with traditional festivity and fervent excitement. The centre of the stamp shows a traditional dragon boat surfing the waves. As Old Master Q navigates with a flag at the bow, Big Potato plays the crucial role of drummer, setting the rhythm for the dragon boat. What the stamp conveys in fact goes beyond good health wishes for the Dragon Boat Festival; it also carries the message of deep friendship—all in the same boat.
$5.40 Stamp – Mid-Autumn Festival
The stamp depicts a golden full moon shining high in the night sky and a traditional festive lantern adorning a corner of the courtyard. The warm yellow glow of the lantern interweaves with the moonlight, creating a rich Mid-Autumn atmosphere. Old Master Q and Big Potato, the best duo, are immersed in enjoying mooncakes, exuding a warm sense of reunion and a touch of gentle nostalgia.
$5.50 Stamp – Christmas
Infusing Eastern humour into Western festive traditions, the stamp gives off an air of Christmas joy as Old Master Q and Big Potato, dressed as Santa Claus, deliver gifts and blessings to all. The stamp features snowflakes and the signature Christmas red in the background, adding a sense of movement and warmth to the scene.
$10 Stamp Sheetlet – Swift Success in the New Year
Themed “Old Master Q Celebrating the Lunar New Year”, the $10 stamp sheetlet presents a lively atmosphere that blends comic humour into traditional festivities. On the right side of the stamp sheetlet, Old Master Q and his companions are depicted riding a spirited horse, denoting swift success and smooth sailing in all endeavours. The scene on the left is another vibrant one: the trio gathers to host a Spring Music Feast to showcase the vitality of the Year of the Horse.
$20 Stamp Sheetlet – Celebrating Christmas
As a city embracing Chinese and Western cultures, Hong Kong showcases a lively festive ambience throughout Christmas. Against a backdrop of kaleidoscopic shops, Old Master Q and Big Potato have transformed themselves into a “Shopping Army” on the $20 stamp sheetlet, setting the Christmas mood in a fun-filled way. Through the busy shopping scene, this stamp captures the unique atmosphere of joy amidst the hustle and bustle on the eve of the festive season.
