A set of special stamps on the theme of “Paintings and Calligraphy of Professor JAO Tsung-i”, with associated philatelic products, will be released for sale on 5 September 2017 (Tuesday).

Professor JAO Tsung-i, whose courtesy name is Bolian or Xuantang and literary name is Gu’an, was born in Chaozhou, Guangdong in 1917. A self-taught scholar, Professor JAO has devoted years to academic research. So far, he has published more than 100 books and over 1 000 scholarly articles. He has also received numerous local and international academic honours, and is hailed as an expert in all the six branches of study in ancient China, and a master of the nine essential skills of traditional Chinese scholar-officials.

As an acclaimed Sinologist and a prominent contemporary giant in traditional Chinese literature, Professor JAO boasts remarkable contributions in the realms of history, literature, language, religion, philosophy and art. Moreover, he is a distinguished artist who excels in calligraphy, and in landscape and portrait paintings. He has also dabbled in music, particularly the guqin (ancient zither) and composition. Good at comprehending related areas by analogy, Professor JAO insists that one should “seek the truth, seek the standard and seek the justness” in the pursuit of knowledge. He has pioneered Chaozhou Studies and Chu Studies covering a total of 13 major research areas, including ancient history, oracle bone inscriptions and Chuci (Verses of Chu).

Professor JAO is noted for his distinctive calligraphy and painting style that fuses classical tradition with innovation. Hongkong Post has issued this set of six stamps on “Paintings and Calligraphy of Professor JAO Tsung-i” as a miniature showcase of his robust, unrestrained brushstrokes, and his mastery of painting and calligraphy. This set of stamps, specially named “Xuantang Bi Qu” (Penmanship of Xuantang) by Professor JAO, forms a series with an accompanying stamp sheetlet, which bears the professor’s autograph and makes a valuable collectible not to be missed.
